Crypto security is of the utmost importance as a bag holder. Unfortunately, theres not much you can do as a Robinhood user other than pray that Vlad Tenev, Robinhood CEO, is taking care of your tendies. However, if you decide to dive deeper into the crypto ecosystem, youll want a wallet to take custody of your own assets. How Do I Know If Others Are Shorting A Stock

Even if you are not planning on short selling a stock, knowing if others are short selling it can be an insight into the expectations others have for stock.

There are two main ways to know if others are shorting a stock. These are the short interest ratio and the days to cover ratio.

  • Short interest ratio: The short interest ratio , sometimes called the short float, compares the number of stock shares currently shorted and the number of stocks available on the market. If the SIR is high, there are a lot of shorted stocks compared to the available stocks a sign that the stock is likely considered overvalued by other investors.
  • Days to cover ratio: Days to cover ratio, sometimes called short interest to volume ratio, compares the average daily trading volume of stock to the outstanding shorted shares. It tries to show how many days it would take to cover all the outstanding shorted shares at the average trading volume. Like SIR, a high day to cover ratio generally indicates a general market opinion that the stock is likely considered overvalued by other investors.

    Define Your Exit Strategy

One of the biggest mistakes new investors make in both long and short positions is opening a position without having a clear and specific exit strategy. If youre not buying and holding, you need to know exactly when you will get out of a position.

For short positions, that means identifying the exact price you will buy shares at to cover your short position. This should be based on your research into the price history and what you think the stock is actually worth.

To build some risk management into your exit strategy, use these tips:

    • Set your exit price a little higher than what you actually expect it to drop to. Its better to exit early with 20% gain than risk holding too long and being forced to buy back at a higher price than you wanted.
    • Put a buy-stop on your order. This is like a stop-loss on a buy order but reversed. If the price increases too much, a buy-stop can automatically trigger a buy so you can close your position and cut your losses before you lose too much.
    • Follow news related to the stock closely so youre ready to exit at a moments notice, before the news affects the price too much.

    Open A Margin Account

Short selling involves selling stock you dont own, which means youll need to borrow it from your broker. You cant do that with a standard brokerage account. Instead you need whats called a margin account.

A margin account is an account that is authorized to borrow stocks or funds. Brokers set specific requirements for opening a margin account and also place restrictions on your short selling activity. For Robinhood, a margin account requires a portfolio worth either $2,000 or 100% of the purchase price.

You also need to meet margin maintenance requirements. This differs from position to position but usually margin maintenance requires that you have 25% to 35% of the total value of the position in account equity. If you own $10,000 worth of Stock XYZ, a 25% maintenance would mean you need at least $2,500 in your Robinhood portfolio at all times.

If your portfolio falls below that maintenance level, Robinhood will issue a margin call, which just means you have to pay back the cash you borrowed. You can do that either by depositing cash into your account or by selling stock on Robinhood.

However, Robinhoods margin account is only for certain kinds of options trading and for margin trading, where you borrow cash to buy a long position in stock. It doesnt offer short selling, so you need to open a margin account with a brokerage that does offer it.

How To Short A Stock On Webull

Once you meet the Webull short selling requirements above, you may proceed with shorting stock on Webull.

As a reminder , when you place a short sell order on Webull, the company acts as an intermediary on your behalf to borrow the shares from another investor, opening your short position, and selling these borrowed shares into the market at the current price.

When you are ready to close your short position , Webull then buys back those shares in the open market and returns them to the lender.

After closing your short position, you net the difference between the price at which you initially sold short the shares, and then at the price you re-purchased them in the market. If you sold at a higher price than you bought, this difference is your profit. If you sold for less than you bought, you realized a loss.

Below you will find the specific steps on how to short a stock on Webull.

    • Step 1: Go to the Watchlist tab on the main screen
    • Step 2: Lookup a stock and select it by tapping on it
    • Step 3: Verify a purple, downward arrow icon appears on the top right of the individual stock page

Can You Short Crypto On Robinhood : Alternatives If You ...

There is a popular saying in the crypto community: ânot your keys, not your coins.â This is also true when you hold cryptocurrencies with dedicated crypto exchanges like Coinbase. Although the coins are yours after you purchase them on the exchange, you will not have access to your private keys unless you transfer your crypto assets into an independent wallet or hardware wallet.

Users do have the option to hold funds in their Coinbase wallets, but their crypto assets could at any time be subject to holds or freezes on their accounts.

    The Risks Of Shorting Bitcoin

I should warn you that short-selling any asset is a high-risk venture. Normally, when you invest in an asset your losses are limited to the amount of money you have invested in that asset.

For example, if you invest $10,000 dollars in a stock, and that stock suddenly collapses and becomes worthless, your losses will be limited to the $10,000 dollars you invested.

When short selling, however, your losses could extend far beyond your initial investment, something that is very important to consider, especially with Bitcoin. The easiest way to explain this is to use an example:

Lets say you short-sold $100 dollars worth of Bitcoin back when prices were only $10 dollars per coin. That means you short-sold 10 coins. Lets assume that you have yet to repurchase the coins, meaning that you still have to pay the owner back with 10 Bitcoins.

Now lets assume that all of a sudden prices went up to $4000, which can definitely happen with Bitcoin. This means that the 10 Bitcoins you need to pay back will now cost you $40,000!

As you can see, short-selling any asset can be very risky. If you want to short sell Bitcoins or anything else, you need to be very careful.

Only invest if you are very confident that prices will drop, and if you have money to cover your losses if investments rise. Make sure you watch prices closely and cut your losses if prices start to rise too quickly.

    Is Shorting Crypto Illegal

In traditional financial institutions short selling is highly regulated. However, crypto trading is unregulated in many jurisdictions, including the US, Canada, Australia, Europe and India. Traders should be wary of cryptos being hyped on social media as this could be a deceptive pump and dump scheme. Note, trading crypto with CFDs or other derivatives is no longer possible in the UK.

The Basics Of A Futures Market

In order to understand fully what a futures market is, itâs important to understand the basics of futures contracts, the assets traded in these markets.

Futures contracts are made in an attempt by producers and suppliers of commodities to avoid market volatility. These producers and suppliers negotiate contracts with an investor who agrees to take on both the risk and reward of a volatile market.

Futures markets or futures exchanges are where these financial products are bought and sold for delivery at some agreed-upon date in the future with a price fixed at the time of the deal. Futures markets are for more than simply agricultural contracts, and now involve the buying, selling and hedging of financial products and future values of interest rates.

Futures contracts can be made or “created” as long as open interest is increased, unlike other securities that are issued. The size of futures markets is larger than that of commodity markets, and are a key part of the financial system.

Robinhood is best known as the stock trading app that pioneered the concept of commission-free trading several years before most brokerages got rid of their trading costs. But you can also buy Bitcoin and six other cryptocurrencies directly through the app.

Like all cryptocurrency trading platforms, Robinhood isn’t the best choice for everyone. Here’s a rundown of the key advantages and disadvantages of using Robinhood to buy Bitcoin.

    How Does Robinhood Compare

How does Robinhood compare with other investment brokerages and crypto exchanges? Robinhood does a few things very well. It provides users with a commission-free and streamlined mobile experience for simplified investing. Robinhoodâs motto is âInvesting for Everyone,â and the company has done a remarkable job of onboarding a new generation of traders.

However, those who are seeking to make long-term investments with vehicles like mutual funds and retirement accounts would do best to look into traditional options like Vanguard. Meanwhile, those who are mainly interested in crypto ownership would do best to purchase their coins via a crypto-specific exchange.

    Stock And Etf Trading

Robinhood’s original product was commission-free trades of stocks and exchange-traded funds. In February 2016, Robinhood introduced instant deposits, crediting users instantly for deposits up to $1,000 previously, funds took three days to appear via ACH transfer. In September 2016 they launched Robinhood Gold, a premium subscription plan that offers up to $50,000 in instant deposits, trading, and more market analytics. As of February 2017, the company had executed over $30 billion in trades. In August 2017, the company began offering free stocks in exchange for referring new users. In December 2017, options trading was introduced. Services not offered include retirement accounts, mutual funds and bonds.

Robinhood typically only supports trading stocks and ETFs listed on the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, and normally does not support over-the-counter securities such as those traded on OTC Markets. In August 2018, Robinhood introduced support for American depositary receipts, adding 250 highly searched international stocks. Robinhood has prohibited its users from purchasing some high-risk penny stocks, such as banning purchases of Helios and Matheson Analytics, the owner of MoviePass, in August 2018.
