Kraken Vs Binance: Security

While both platforms meet strict U.S. standards for the know your customer rule, they approach security a bit differently. For instance, Binance doesnt dedicate any space to disclosing details on its security measures. The company mentions in an article that Binance only holds a small percentage of coins in its hot wallets, with the rest in cold storage.

In contrast, Kraken stands out for its security measures and aims to improve security for the industry as a whole. It holds 95% of deposits in air-gapped, geographically distributed cold storage. In addition, they perform penetration testing, run a bug bounty program, and undergo a proof-of-reserves audit conducted by a third party.

Its also important to note that Kraken has been operating since 2013 and hasnt been hacked. But Kraken and Binance have undergone distributed denial-of-service attacks over the years.

Yet, Binance suffered a large-scale security breach in 2019, resulting in the theft of over $40,000,000 in Bitcoin. More recently, the Justice Department and the Internal Revenue service disclosed they are investigating Binance for illicit activity, according to Bloomberg. The outlet also reported that a blockchain forensics firm said, more funds tied to criminal activity flowed through Binance than any other crypto exchange.

How To Open A Margin Position On Kraken

Opening a position happens when the user receives advanced funds which will help them execute a leveraged trade.

In general, two types of positions can be opened, based on whether the user wants to go long or go short.

To open a long position for, lets say ETH/EUR, the Kraken exchange will advance EUR to purchase ETH.

On the other hand, if the user wants to open a short position, they will advance ETH so the user can sell it for EUR.

Once logged into the account, the user has to go to the New Order tab and then select Intermediate to enable margin trading.

Once there, the following screen will be displayed.

The user will be able to either buy or sell using the given leverage on the right, as shown on the above screenshot. For example, if the user decides to use a leverage amount of 3, which is 3:1, this will triple their buying power.

If the user wants to go long, theyd have to set up a buy order, as in the above instructions.

Next, the user has to set up the Order Type. If they decide to go with the market, they need to select market from the two types. However, if they want to execute the trade as the price reaches a certain limit, theyd have to choose limit.

Shorting Ethereum On Exchanges

As is the case with Bitcoin, it is also possible to short Ethereum on crypto exchanges. Shorting Ethereum on Kraken has never been easy for anyone looking to profit from margin trading. In this case, one only needs to deposit a small amount on the exchange, which will be magnified by leverage of, say, 1:3 offered by the exchange.

With sufficient capital, thanks to the leverage, a sell position can be triggered on the ETHUSD pair to profit on the price tanking. The profit will be the difference between the opening price and the price at which the trade is closed.

For instance, if ETHUSD is priced at $3200 and one enters a short position in the exchange, a profit will be accrued on the price tanking to $3100.

Bitcoin As An Asset Is Risky

Price is just one of several risks you will have to evaluate while shorting the cryptocurrency. As compared to other, more established assets, Bitcoin is nascent. It has been around for only 13 years. Therefore, there isn’t sufficient data or information for investors to make an educated decision about its workings or feasibility as an asset. For example, several issues related to Bitcoin forks are still unresolved. While established platforms like CME are safer and guarantee execution for Bitcoin derivatives, new platforms started off being “clunky” and are susceptible to hacks.

Knowledge Of Order Types Is A Must

Before you undertake a short position in Bitcoin, you should brush up on your knowledge of different order types. They can help limit losses if the price trajectory does not go in the direction that you bet initially. For example, using stop-limit orders while trading derivatives can curtail your losses.

Shorting Ether Using Contract For Difference

Contract for Difference is a derivative instrument that also makes it possible to profit from price fluctuations. In this case, one can enter a short position on ETHUSD without assuming ownership of the Ether coins.

The ETHUSD price tanking would allow one to generate a profit on the difference between when the short was placed and the final price, which should be lower. Price increasing after one has entered a short position would only amount to a loss.

The Good News And The Bad News On Shorting Crypto

12+ How To Short Bitcoin On Kraken

The bad news on shorting crypto is there are very few ways for an upstanding US citizen who isnt an accredited investor to short cryptos in some states and the number of coins one can short is limited.

While Kraken, Poloniex, and Bitfinex will be viable options for those in most states, in a few states using CBOE Bitcoin futures or CME Bitcoin futures to short Bitcoin might be your only options. That means in some states you will end up ONLY being able to short Bitcoin via the CBOE and CME cash settled contracts.

To add to that bad news, there are actually only a handful of brokers who will let you access Bitcoin futures .

Meanwhile, even with Kraken, Poloniex, and Bitfinex, your options are limited to the coins they allow shorting on .

The good news in all that bad news is this however, 1. anyone can open an account with one of the above brokers, and 2. even if your options for cryptos you want to short are limited, all cryptos tends to follow each other .

With that covered, lets move onto all the different options a person has, including those who dont live in the U.S., are accredited, or who like to live dangerously.

Is Your Cryptocurrency Safe With Kraken

Security is one of Kraken’s founding principles. It hasn’t been hacked since it launched in 2013 and is widely recognized as one of the most secure cryptocurrency exchanges. That said, cryptocurrency security is a hotly debated topic and any exchange can be susceptible to hacks. Here’s more on Kraken’s approach to security.

  • Coin storage: Kraken says 95% of its crypto assets are kept in cold storage . It also boasts full reserves and has undertaken an external proof of reserves audit.
  • Platform and information security: Its physical servers are kept under 24/7 surveillance. Sensitive information is encrypted at both a system and data level.
  • Security testing: Ongoing penetration tests protect Kraken’s systems, both via its internal team and bug bounty program. The bug bounty programs incentivize ethical hackers to find and report bugs.
  • User security features and education: Kraken’s website points out that, “No amount of security on our end can make up for inadequate personal security.” It has two-factor authentication, secure emails, and security locks. More than that, it supplements its security by teaching users how to protect their accounts.

Some Advice On Shorting Crypto

Hedging and Using Stops Vs. Borrowing Money to go to the Casino. Shorting crypto with leverage can be a lot like borrowing money to go to the casino when done for speculation and not as a hedge. It can make a ton of sense to use leverage on a small dollar amount to hedge against a long position with stops set. However, if you are just speculating without stops on high leverage , you run a real risk of getting liquidated. If you dont understand the risks of liquidation, you are likely not ready to short Bitcoin on margin. Learn more about margin trading.

Most cryptos track each other. In most cases you can short or long the top cryptos and use them as a proxy for the whole market. If the market is going down, then ETH, XRP, and BTC are probably going down and at least one is likely taking a hit as hard as any other crypto. Likewise, if the market is up, then they are probably all going up and in proportion with other cryptos. So in most cases you wont need to short every crypto, you can just use one of the top coins as a proxy. Since you wont have the choice to short many cryptos in many cases, this is useful to know. That said, each coin is its own thing, so DYOR.

The Risks Of Shorting Bitcoin

I should warn you that short-selling any asset is a high-risk venture. Normally, when you invest in an asset your losses are limited to the amount of money you have invested in that asset.

For example, if you invest $10,000 dollars in a stock, and that stock suddenly collapses and becomes worthless, your losses will be limited to the $10,000 dollars you invested.

When short selling, however, your losses could extend far beyond your initial investment, something that is very important to consider, especially with Bitcoin. The easiest way to explain this is to use an example:

Lets say you short-sold $100 dollars worth of Bitcoin back when prices were only $10 dollars per coin. That means you short-sold 10 coins. Lets assume that you have yet to repurchase the coins, meaning that you still have to pay the owner back with 10 Bitcoins.

Now lets assume that all of a sudden prices went up to $4000, which can definitely happen with Bitcoin. This means that the 10 Bitcoins you need to pay back will now cost you $40,000!

As you can see, short-selling any asset can be very risky. If you want to short sell Bitcoins or anything else, you need to be very careful.

Only invest if you are very confident that prices will drop, and if you have money to cover your losses if investments rise. Make sure you watch prices closely and cut your losses if prices start to rise too quickly.
